Understanding 5G

5G simply means the "fifth generation" of wireless networks, with the first generation (1G) beginning in the 1980's that delivered analog voice; the second, (2G) beginning in the early 1990's, which introduced digital voice; the third (3G) beginning in the early 2000's, which brought mobile data; and the fourth (4G LTE), mobile broadband.  Sometimes, internet companies also use a G after a number to indicate the data transmission speed, which can make things confusing.  For example, they may state that they offer 10G.  This means that the data speed is 10 Gigahertz (10 GHz), not that it is 10th generation.

This article from January 17, 2018 explains why 5G is so different from 4G in that 5G technology uses a phased array of antennas, that through constructive interference, create a directed beam of high energy electromagnetic radiation, in effect, a "bullet" of energy; as opposed to 4G technology which uses omnidirectional antennas that "blanket" the surrounding environment with radiation.

While some of the frequencies used for 5G are in bands of the electromagnetic spectrum that have been previously studied, some of the frequencies have never been utilized by man before, and were not studied for any biological effects before being used.  Some 5G technology utilizes much smaller waves at much higher frequencies, called millimeter waves.  Mm waves have wavelengths between 1 and 10 mm, and propagate at very high frequencies (30-300 GHz).  Because they contain "packets" of information, these signals are generally pulsed (not continuous), and highly modulated (not the standard repeating sine waveform shape).  Pulsed and modulated signals are two characteristics of EMR already known to be more biologically damaging.  The non-thermal biological effects of 5G technology, particularly the newer purchased allotments of mm-wave spectrum bandwidth, were not studied prior to allowing companies to purchase said bandwidth and transmit data using these smaller wavelengths and higher frequencies.

Newer 5G phones use mm waves where transmitters are available (generally more dense, urban areas).  Otherwise, they can still operate on 4G LTE if no 5G transmitters are in the proximity.  Millimeter (mm) waves are also used for airplane radar, operation of automatic doors (i.e. at the grocery store), sensors on cars, newer internet routers, satellite transmissions, and more.  The worst thing is that there is not even a consumer-level RF tester for the majority of the range of mm waves, so without an expensive spectrum analyzer, one won't be able to tell how much radiation from these frequencies is even in one's environment.  Remember, as explained on the Notes About Health Symptoms page, if symptoms are noticed in a specific geographical location, but nothing registers on one's RF meter, it could be because a different frequency is present in the environment that is not detectable by one's particular RF meter.

SMALL CELLS, MINI CELL TOWERS, WIRELESS FACILITIES AND HEALTH: LETTERS FROM SCIENTISTS ON THE HEALTH RISK OF 5G

This February 11, 2018 Article by Paul Héroux, Ph.D., Professor of Electromagnetic Toxicology, Faculty of Medicine McGill University, explains how, not surprisingly, industry and profit are prevailing over public health in order to allow the expansion of 5G technology.  It is published on a French website, but the text is in English.

This July 2021 study was written by Dr Fiorella Belpoggi, BSC, PhD, International Academy of Toxicologic Pathology Fellow (IATPF), Ramazzini Institute, Bologna (Italy), at the request of the Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) and managed by the Scientific Foresight Unit, within the Directorate-General for Parliamentary Research Services (EPRS) of the Secretariat of the European Parliament.  This 198-page study document was prepared for, and addressed to, the Members and staff of the European Parliament as background material to assist them in their parliamentary work.  It indicates that there is much cause for concern regarding the biological effects of 5G technology.  Recommendations to the Parliament are to opt for novel technology for mobile phones that enables RF exposures to be reduced, revising the exposure limits for the public and the environment in order to reduce risk from cell towers, adopting measures to incentivize reductions of RF-EMF exposures, promoting multidisciplinary scientific research to assess the long-term health effects of 5G and to find an adequate method for monitoring exposure to 5G, and providing informational campaigns of 5G.

The articles below are also linked on the EHS page, but was also appropriate for this list.  The first ever study on 5G; published in the Swedish language on February 22, 2022, in the journal, Medicinsk Access; and later in English, in the journal, Annals of Case Reports; indicates that 5G causes Microwave Syndrome.  Below is first, a link to the summary of the article, and next, the actual case report.  Click the "English" button at the top of the page to read the summary in English.

First study to date: 5G causes microwave syndrome

The article below is also linked on the EHS page, but was also appropriate for this list.  This article published June 19, 2024 in the journal, Reviews on Environmental Health, presents seven case studies, comprising 16 persons, on health effects from real 5G RF radiation exposure, showing that the study persons developed the microwave syndrome (EHS) after installation of 5G base stations in the neighborhood of their dwellings.

Some of the newer sensing technology employed in today's automobiles (i.e. blind spot detectors, occupant sensors, etc.) operates using mm wave radar, some even designed to emit into the cabin of the vehicle.  Other radar emissions travel outward from the vehicle, causing the most harm while one is close to other vehicles, such as sitting at a light or in a traffic jam.  Dr.  Ronald N. Kostoff explains in this September 16, 2018 article.
